Tessy Britton is Director of Participatory City, an initiative that will start to build a large urban Demonstration Neighbourhood in a London borough (of 200,000+ residents) in early 2017. Working closely with the local authority and many other collaborators the intention is that over a 5 year period this neighbourhood will become a model of equality, wellbeing and sustainability.
For the last 6 years Tessy has been researching and prototyping new ways to support widespread practical participation, the kind of participation that works with the fabric of daily life.
Local people have been inventing unique and innovative projects across the globe. Taken together these projects paint a picture of a different kind of neighbourhood - where positive effects are generated - by everyone, for everyone - in the course of going about their daily lives.
Participatory City aims to re-organised our systems of participation, to allow for new platforms, networks and spaces to be built, that create the conditions where citizens, government and other institutions can collaborate together more effectively to invigorate places.
This new approach sees participation as a key building block for building cohesive and sustainable cities of the future. Through the participatory ecology created, neighbourhoods could be re-organised not just for practicality, but also to be inspiring and exciting places to live: expanding our horizons, growing ideas and projects, inventing new livelihoods.
Tessy works with an international network of incredible people who are all inspired by the idea that by re-designing parts of how society works, we can build harmonious neighbourhoods together - and where prosperity is more equally shared.
